I didn't know about this paper. It's great! I loved the line that says we are (or should be) scientists first and salespeople second (in contrast to Davis' prescription).

+1, Connie! I used to think the Davis paper was a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek satire about how NOT to choose research topics. Then I discovered it is required, dead-in-earnest reading for doctoral students in many programs.

As an antidote (and sometimes to gleefully annoy colleagues who were assigning the reading at the same time in their courses), I'd assign this piece by two friends, a lovely take-down of the normative interpretation of Davis's statement: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2041386613479963?journalCode=opra
